Mat Gamel returns to roster for Nashville Sounds

July 21, 2009

I saw it coming on July 7th and blogged that Gamel was likely to be sent back down to Nashville.  Two weeks later . . . guess who’s back?

The Milwaukee Brewers sent the offensively struggling 3B Mat Gamel back down for more work in Triple-A baseball today. Gamel was called up to the Brewers on May 14th and was very hot in his first several games but his bat cooled off and he struggled with an average that ranged from .220 to .245 since.

Gamel has played in 48 games with Milwaukee in 2009. He is batting just .239 with a .336 OBP. When he was called up May 14th he was batting .336 (40-for-119) with 11 doubles, eight home runs, and 31 RBIs in 33 games for Nashville.

The question now is how this move will impact Adam Heether who has been playing exceptionally well at 3B since Gamel’s leave on May 14th.

Brewers’ GM Doug Melvin is reported to have said, “We still like Mat a lot. It will be better for him to go down and play every day. He wouldn’t play with Lopez here.”

Sounds Baseball by you.
