Alcides Escobar could get the ‘Big Call’ from Milwaukee soon

July 9, 2009

John Manual of Baseball America recently profiled the top ten hot prospects in the minor leagues (in SI) who could get a soon call-up that would impact the mother-team’s play-off chances. Number 2 on the list was SS Alcides Escobar.

Here’s what he said about the Sound’s shortstop:

With J.J. Hardy struggling (.663 OPS) in Milwaukee and Rickie Weeks out at second base, Escobar is closer than ever to being able to help the Brewers in a pennant race. He’s the best defensive shortstop in the minors, with smooth infield actions, soft hands and excellent footwork. He also is a plus runner who is starting to make his tools play better offensively. He’s up to .302 at Triple-A Nashville, is an excellent bunter and improved base stealer (28-for-35).

I think Manual is spot-on.

I sat behind Tommy Lasorda on Tuesday night at Greer as we watched the Sounds and Isotopes play. Lasorda was liberal in his praise of Escobar. It was fun watching Lasorda’s reaction to some of the normal plays Escobar made that night. You could tell Tommy recognized that Escobar is special.

Let’s hope that the Brewers gives Alcides his big chance soon.

Escobar is only 22 and made his initial major league debut September 3rd, 2008. He played in nine games for Milwaukee last season, batting .500.

Here are all my blog posts on Escobar so far this year.

Hee are all my photos tagged ‘Escobar‘ on Flickr for this season.
