Three Nashville Sounds players named to PCL All-Star team

allstars09.jpgThree Nashville Sounds baseball players have been named to the Pacific Coast League All-Star team: outfielder Brendan Katin, reliever R.J. Swindle, and shortstop Alcides Escobar.  No PCL team had more than three players named.

Here are some stats highlights of the three All-Stars through June 30th.

Brendan Katin is batting .272 with 17 home runs (3rd in PCL) and 65 RBIs (2nd in PCL).  His 42 extra-base hits is also second-best in the PCL. Katin has hit 21 doubles, and leads the team with 19 multiple-RBI games and 15 go-ahead RBIs for 2009.

This is the 26 year-old Fort Myers, Fla. native’s third All-Star appearance at the Triple-A level in his five-year professional career.

Alcides Escobar will be the starting shortstop for the PCL All-Star team. Escobar, just 22 years old, is batting .294 and tied for 2nd in the PCL with 27 team-leading stolen bases. He also is 4th in the PCL with runs scored, with 56.  The young shortstop has 19 doubles, four triples, three HRS, and 27 RBIs.

The 2009 All-Star honor is his 4th in six professional seasons. He played in last year’s Southern League All-Star Game. Alcides was also recently named to the MLB All-Star Futures Game, to be held in St. Louis on Sunday, July 12th.

R.J. Swindle, 25, will make his first career All-Star appearance. The lefty has posted impressive numbers against PCL batters this season: 2-1 with a 0.79 ERA, plus one save in 23 outings for Nashville. PCL batters are hitting only .164 against the southpaw.

The 2009 Triple-A All-Star Game will be broadcast live on television on ESPN2 as well as on the radio on Sports Radio 560 AM at 9:00 p.m. CDT.
