LHP Chris Cody pitches well but takes loss in first Triple-A game in 2-1 loss to I-Cubs

June 5, 2009

The Nashville Sounds (31-25) can hardly expect to win when they only get two hits in an entire game while also leaving eight runners on base. Unfortunately this dismal offensive performance could not have come at a worse time for newly promoted LHP Chris Cody, who debuted tonight in his first Triple-A game.  The Sounds lost to the I-Cubs 2-1 at Greer Stadium tonight in ideal weather conditions before a home crowd of 7,885 fans.

Hernan Iribarren’s 4th inning single was the only hit the Sounds had until Heether’s single in the 9th inning. That was the extent of the hit-production tonight for Nashville.

Game summary

Iowa plated their first run in the top of the third. Kevin Hart reached on an infield single to 3rd and then advanced to 2B on a throwing error by Heether, who tried to throw the runner out after bobbling the play. Fuld’s ground-out to 2B advanced Hart to 3B.  39-year old So Taguchi then hit a sac-fly to right scoring Hart.  1-0 Iowa.

The I-Cubs plated their only other run in the 4th inning. John-Ford Griffin singled to center.  Doug Deeds followed with a single liner to right. Griffin to 2B. Kyle Reynolds then placed a perfect sacrifice bunt in front of the plate and was safe at 1st.  With bases loaded Cody forced Machado to ground into a 6-4-3 double play but Griffin scored.  2-0 I-Cubs.

Nashville barely found life in the 6th inning. Iribarren led off with a walk. Justin Berg then threw a wild pitch advancing Iribarren to 2B.  Koshansky’s ground out to 1B advanced Iribarren to third. Brendan Katin then hit a hard grounder to SS and Iribarren scored.  2-1 final, I-Cubs win.

Iowa’s Kevin Hart (W, 1-3) pitched very well, going 5 innings, yielding just one hit, no runs and striking out five. Parker pitched the 9th, giving up a hit but earning his 5th save.

Nashville’s Chris Cody (L, 0-1) pitched solidly; going 6.1 innings, giving up 8 hits, 2 runs (1 earned), walked one and struck out one. Relievers Swindle and Houston threw a combined 2.2 innings of scoreless ball, giving up one hit.
