Nashville Sounds play on recent road series uninspiring

May 29, 2009

The Nashville Sounds left Greer Stadium on May 20 to start an eight game road series having won 6 of their last 8. Nashville was arguably the hottest team in the PCL on May 20th (see post). They left for their road series on an exciting note as they came back in the ninth to win in dramatic fashion against the Las Vegas 51s.

The starters for Nashville only won one game on the recent road series.

The Sounds return to Greer tomorrow Friday evening to face the O-Royals again on a thud.

The Sounds’s play in the most recent road series was painful to follow. They only won 3 of 8 games, and only one of those victories was even recorded by a starting pitcher. Their two aces Dillard and Burns lost three of the five games.

Nashville (26-22) is still in first place in the American North – by a half game – only because everyone else in the division right now is playing .500 ball or worse. The Omaha Royals (21-26) come into Greer Friday evening with a dismal 2-8 slide in their last ten games.

My post on 5.20 asked these questions going into the road series the Sounds just finished (May 21st – 28th):

  • Will Garciaparra see more PT and will he perform better?
He was 4-9, K, 2B, RBI in the Portand series. Was 1-3, 1 2B in the Tacoma series.
  • Will Heether be the regular starting 3B?
He started at 3B in 5 of the 8 games.
  • Will Almonte get much PT?
He was mainly relegated to a PH role in the opening series with Portland (going 1-5) but started every game in the Tacoma series going 6-15).
  • Will Koshanky get hot again on the road?
    Against Tacoma he went 3-12, SF, S RBI, 3 R, 3 BB, 4 K.
  • Will Gwynn continue his consistency?
Gwynn was traded on May 21st.
  • Will Salome get more PT, sharing with Corporan the duties?
Salome played in 3 games with Portland and did not play at all against Tacoma.
  • Will Burns and Dillard continue their domination?
No. Dillard lost two of the recent road games and Burns one.
  • Will Iribarren get PT in Milwaukee?
    No.
  • Will Gamel produce during the inter-league play (May 22-24th) for Milwaukee?
He was 2 for 10. His last week has been 0 f0r 14 after starting out 4 for 9.
  • Will Gillespie continue to start even though his bat is very weak?
    Yes. He went a combined 6 for 31  (.193), 2R, 1 3B, 3 2B, 3 BB, 2 BI, 6 K)
