Sounds lose to Tacoma despite two big innings

May 26, 2009

When it rains it pours.

Katin continues his hot bat at Tacoma.

The Nashville Sounds (25-21) lost to the Tacoma Rainers (25-20) tonight despite having two big innings in which they scored 3 runs each. The Sound’s performance in Tacoma these past two nights seems more like the Keystone Cops than the team that went into Tacoma with a win-loss record of 25-19.  Nashville committed four errors in tonight’s loss, two by Escobar in one inning.

Starter Tim Dillard (6-2) for Nashville had his second straight rocky start of the season, even though he did not absorb the loss tonight. Reliever Chris Narveson (1-3) was pegged with the loss, pitching in the 6th and 7th innings, giving up 4 runs (3 earned). Tacoma’s reliever – Hull (5-2) – was the victor, pitching just one inning.

Tonight’s action reads like a train wreck.

Nashville started off red-hot in the first after being virtually shut-down the night before. After a sac-fly by Koshansky, Brendan Katin stepped up and hit a two-run homer (6) to right.  3-0 Sounds.

Tacoma came right back in their half of the first to tie the score.  Dillard yielded three straight singles and two runners scored with the assistance of a fielding error by Katin.  Brad Nelson’s sac-fly made it a 3-3 tie after one.

The Rainers added a single run in the third and fourth innings making it 5-3 Tacoma after four.

In the top of sixth the Sounds exploded again, scoring three more runs and taking a 6-5 lead, partially fueld by two singles and the 13th double of the season by Iribarren. A throwing error and a sac-fly plated two more Sounds.  6-5 Sounds.

The wheels fell off for the Sounds in the bottom of the sixth and seventh. Tacoma only scored one run in the sixth on the back of a single, a wild pitch, a throwing error, and another wild pitch.  6-6 tie.

The Rainers plated three more runs inthe 7th on the strength of two singles and a double, combined with two Sound’s errors – both by Escobar – and some plain bad pitching. 9-6 Tacoma.

Both teams would score one more run in their half of the eight to make the final score 10-7.

Nashville out hit the Rainers 14 to 12.

Solid offensive performances for Nashville tonight:

Brendan Katin: 3 for 5, 2 runs, 1 HR, 2 RBIs.

Hernan Iribarren: 3 for 5, 2 runs, 1 2B, 1 RBI
