Sounds win (5-4) in 11th inning against Beavers

May 22, 2009

The Nashville Sounds (24-18) end the Portland Beaver’s (21-21) 5-game win-streak last night, but it took 11 innings to do it. It was only the second extra inning (1-1) game for Nashville.

Ryan Houston (1-1) notched his first victory tonight.

Sound’s LHP starting pitcher Sam Narron (0-1), coming off the DL, pitched very well (though a no-decision for him). Narron threw five innings, gave up five hits, two runs (2 earned), did not walk a batter, and struck-out three. The winning pitcher of record was Ryan Houston (1-1).

Jonathan Ellis (5-1), the Beaver’s ace, was the fifth relief pitcher of the evening and suffered his first loss of the season.

There were four lead changes before the decision was final. The Sounds found themselves down 2-0 after three and still came back to win. Coming into tonight’s game Nashville was 13-13 when their opponent scores first, so tonight’s win was a good one, especially for being on the road.

Game summary

The first batter Narron faced hit a double (Dowdy, 10) and it appeared it could be a long evening for Narron. Dowdy would score one out later on a Venable ground-out. 1-0 Beavers. Portland increased the lead 2-0 in the third on a Venable (7) homer to left.

Nashville’s Brendan Katin led-off the fourth inning with a solo-shot (3) to left field [listen to Mp3 of the blast]. It was now 2-1 Beavers.

The Sounds took the lead in the sixth scoring two runs. Joe Koshanksy led-off with his eighth homer of the season. Two outs later Salome doubled (4) to center. Cole Gillespie, in front of his home town, then singled Salome home. 3-2 Sounds.

Nashville padded their lead in the eighth when Iribarren doubled (11) teammate Koshanski (walked) home. 4-2 Sounds.  But Portland came back in their half of the eighth too. Emil Brown hit a solo home run (3) to center for the Beavers. 4-3 Sounds.

The Sounds failed to score in the ninth and allowed Portland to tie it up in the bottom. Pinch-hitter Vince Sinisi singled home pinch-runner Matt Buschmann with one out. 4-4 after nine.

Nashville had a chance to win it in the 10th. Iribarren got a one-out single to center. Salome advanced Iribarren to 2nd on a ground-out. With Cole Gillespie batting, Iribarren stole third (7). Nashville’s threat was short-lived when Gillespie struck out swinging.

The Beavers threatened in the 10th when Emil Brown walked and Kyle Blanks singled to center. Brown advanced to 3rd on a throwing error by Bourgeois. Runners were on 1st and 3rd with two outs. Reliever Ryan Houston then got Jose Lobaton to ground out to Iribarren and the 10th-inning Beaver-threat was extinguished.

The Sounds opened the 11th innings with a one-out Bourgeois single to right. Escobar followed with a single to center as Bourgeois took third. Escobar then stole 2nd (19) with Heether batting. Ellis walked Heether to load the bases with one out. Joe Koshansky then hit what would be the game-inning sacrifice fly to center, scoring Bourgeois. Katin ended the inning striking out.  5-4 Sounds.

The Beavers would not go down silently though. They had a runner on second with one out in the 11th before Houston got Portland’s last two batters to ground out to Escobar.

Strong performances for Nashville tonight:

Jason Bourgeois (2-6), 1R

Joe Koshansky (1-4), 2R, 1 HR. 2 RBIs (game-winning)

Hernan Iribarren (2-5) 1 double, 1 RBI

Cole Gillespie (2-3), 1 triple
