Sounds lose opener to Portland in 6-4 defeat of Dillard

Tim Dillard (6-2) took the loss tonight against Portland.

The Nashville Sounds (23-18) lost a tough decision against the Portland Beavers (21-20) tonight in a 6-4 decision that also yielded Tim Dillard (6-2) his second loss of the season. An oddity is that the Sounds are 16-4 when they outhit their opponent, but this game came down to two bad pitches Sound’s pitchers served up, both resulting in homers accounting for five Beaver runs.

Game summary

The Sounds struck first on the scoreboard in their half of the first inning.  With Tony Gwynn traded earlier int he day to the Padres, Jason Bourgeois was the new Sound’s lead-off batter, a role Bourgeois had only served in twice. Bourgeois opened by singling to center. With one out Adam Heether doubled (4) to left scoring Bourgeois. 1-0 Sounds. One out later Brendan Katin doubled (12) and scored Heether. 2-0 Sounds.

Nashville took a 3-0 lead in the third on the strength of Katin’s bat again. Escobar had doubled earlier and Katin’s 13th double scored Escobar 3-0 Sounds.

It only took one inning and one swing for the Beavers to tie the game in the fourth. Chad Huffman hit a three-run home run (9th) to center to make it a 3-3 tie.

Portland took the lead in the 6th inning on a wild pitch by Dillard, scoring Huffman who had walked. 4-3 Portland. The Beavers took the lead permanently in the eighth, with Dave Johnson pitching, on a two run home run by Eliezer Alfonzo (6) to left field.

The Sounds mounted a modest come back int he ninth with two outs. Gillespie doubled (4) and Garciaparra singled him home to make the final score 6-4.

Hot bats for Nashville were:  Escobar (2-4, 2 runs, 2 doubles), Heether (3-3, 1 run, 1 double), Brendan Katin (2-4, 1 double, 2 RBIs), and Garciaparra (2-4, 1 RBI).
