Nashville takes 3 of 4 against I-Cubs with 4-2 decision

Nashville Sound’s pitcher Mike Burns (4-0) pitched a strong 7.2 innings against the Iowa Cubs tonight in a 4-2 decision at Principal Park.

Game summary

Both teams were scoreless in the first three innings and then each scored a single run in their respective 4th inning. Nashville’s first run was the result of a Mat Gamel solo home run (8). Iowa’s single 4th-inning run came from a double by Deeds (6) scoring Snyder.

Mike Burns (4-0) for Nashville

Nashville broke the 1-1 tie in the 7th inning on a lead-off solo shot (6) by red-hot Joe Koshansky. With the lead 2-1, Nashville added two more runs in their 8th. Tony Gwynn hit an RBI-double scoring Gillespie from 2nd.  3-1. Escobar then reached on an error by 2nd baseman Matulia, allowing Gwynn to score. 4-1 Sounds.

The final and second run for Iowa came in their half of the 8th when Matulia doubled to lead-off then scored with two outs on an infield hit by Jake Fox. That would be the final score: 4-2 Sounds.

Burns gave up seven hits, two runs (one earned), struck-out three and did not walk a single batter. Ace-reliever Chris Smith pitched the 9th inning to gather his fifth save of the season. The Sounds are now 15-12.

Esmailin Caridad (3-2) took the loss for Iowa (14-12)  though he also pitched a strong game; going seven innings, two runs (both earned).
