Nashville pitching shuts down Iowa line-up, win 5-1

May 4, 2009

A total of four Nashville (13-11) pitchers shut down Iowa (13-10) hitters last night in Des Moines and the Sounds notched a 5-1 victory. The Sounds are now 9-1 when outhitting their opponents. They outhit Iowa last night nine to five.  Starting RHP pitcher Nick Green(2-2) scored his second win on the year. He went five innings, giving up four hits on just one run.

Sounds Baseball by you.

Joe Koshansky bats on April 14th. He got the game-winning RBI tnoight, and homered.

Only three Cub’s batters got a base hit: Fuld (1), Deeds (1), and Snyder (2). The normally hot bats of Fox (.400), Robinson (.358) and Blanco (.338) went a combined 1 for 11. Blanco’s 10-game hitting streak was also snapped.

Nashville got all the firepower from the plate they needed in the fourth inning. Tony Gwynn doubled to start the inning. Escobar then singled to left but Gwynn held at third. Sound’s-slugger Mat Gamel then hit his ninth double of the season scoring Gwynn and moving Escobar to third. That tied the score 1-1. Katin then hit into a fielder’s choice resulting in Escobar out at the plate, Gamel going to third.  Joe Koshansky, struggling at the plate this year (.171) then got an RBI force-out to short, scoring Gamel from 3rd.  2-0 Sounds.  That would be all Nashville would need to win but their offense was not through.

As the game entered the ninth the Sounds nursed a two-run lead.  They had given up 15 runs in the ninth to opponents (prior to tonight) and only scored two themselves. Katin opened the inning with a  adouble and Joe Koshanski followed with a two-run home run (4) blast to right. 4-2 Sounds. Nashville added another insurance run later in the inning on a Cole Gillespie sac-fly. It was Gillespie’s second RBI in an otherwise paltry performance this year, having gone 2 for 24 so far (.125).

The Cub’s only run came in the fourth inning on a solo shot by Brad Snyder (6). Iowa reliever J.R. Mathes was pegged with the loss (3-3).
