Cole Gillespie has been disappointing so far

May 2, 2009

Outfielder Cole Gillespie has been with the Sounds for one week now. He was called up on April 23rd. The move was possible because Nashville traded Jason Tyner to the Tigers.

In his first full week he has recorded 17 at-bats in six games. He has managed a mere two hits for a .117 batting average. During those six games he took the bat out of the hands of either Tony Gwynn (CF, .286) or Jason Bourgeois (LF, .286).

From a point of view of winning games, Gillespie’s bat is hurting the club.

He spent the  entire 2008 season at Double-A Huntsville, hitting .281 (130-for-462) with 14 home runs, four triples, 38 doubles, and 79 RBIs in 131 games. Entering the 2009 season, Gillespie was rated as Milwaukee’s #9 prospect by Baseball America.
