Memphis talent comes in three: Robinson, Craig and Greene

April 21, 2009

As the Nashville Sounds (7-5) and Memphis Redbirds (7-4) begin their first series of the 2009 campaign fans should look for some excitement to three key Memphis players who are currently swinging effectively for average.

The hottest bats (through 4/20) for the Memphis Redbirds – Triple-A for the St. Louis Cardinals – are Shane Robinson (.395), Allen Craig (.333), and Tyler Greene (.326).

Robinson was listed as the overall #28 prospect for the Cardinals by Baseball America as the season began. He was brought up into AAA last year and played just 42 games, struggling with a .220 average. The 2009 season has been a different experience for the speedy outfielder who was drafted from Florida State in 2006. He is currently batting .395, good enough for 6th place in the PCL.

Greene is the #16 prospect for the Redbirds according to Baseball America. Greene had a knee injury in 2007 after signing a $1.1 million dollar bonus in when he was drafted in 2005.  The Cardinals have high expectations for Tyler and is expected to be brought up to the majors in 2009.

Craig (.333) was drafted in 2006 and is playing in his first season in Triple-A ball as 3B for the Redbirds. Baseball America ranks him as the #26 prospect for the Cardinals.  He has good power and has played in all eleven games for Memphis this year.

Sounds and Redbird fans will witness the two teams play each other 16 times again this year. The Sounds were 6-10 against the Redbirds in 2008.
