Hot-streaking Sounds win third in a row against Zephyrs on road, 9-7

April 19, 2009

The Nashville Sounds (6-5) broke above the .500 level for the first time this year as they came from behind to defeat the New Orleans Zephyrs (4-7) for the third straight road victory. Pitcher Matt Ginter (1-1) won his first decision this year even though he only pitched one inning (the 6th), replacing Dave Johnson in the bottom of the 6th inning. Sounds closer Chris Narveson posted his third save of the year, giving up a solo home run in the bottom of the 9th.

All of the starting-Sounds  got at least one   particular fire power coming from Gwynn  and Iribarren with doubles, Katin with a stand-up triple, and home runs by Iribarren (1), Koshansky (1), and Gamel (3).

The Sounds were down 6-3 after five but scored three times in the 6th with three run-scoring singles by Bourgeois, Almonte, and Escobar. They went ahead (7-6) in the 7th when Koshanski hit a solo home run. In the 8th inning the streaking Sounds added two more runs on the strength of Matt Gamel’s hot bat, with his third homer of the season, with a runner on base.

Gamel is still swinging the bat very well. His average is now .436 – which is good enough for the third highest average in the Pacific Coast League.

The Sounds have won 4 out of 5 games now, three on the road. They play the Zephyrs in the final game of this series Monday at 11:30 a.m., then they take on the Memphis Redbirds in a four-game series at Memphis before returning home to face the always-tough Iowa Cubs. RHP Brett Sinkbeil (1-1, 11.57) is expected to take the mound for the first time at Zephyr Field. His opponent will be LHP Sam Narron (0-1, 4.50).

Narron pitched five innings in a no-decision on opening day (April 9th) when he gave up three earned runs. His only loss this year came on April 14th against Oklahoma City (at Nashville) when he pitched seven innings, again giving up three earned runs.
