Sounds win second straight on road against Zephyrs 5-2

The Nashville Sounds (5-5) won their second straight road victory of their opening away series for 2009 by defeating the New 4830 by kwmcnuttOrleans Zephyrs tonight by a score of 5-2. Sound’s pitcher Tim Dillard (2-0) won his second straight outing by pitching six innings and giving up just one run. His first victory came five days earlier (4/13) in a 4-3 contest with Oklahoma City. Chris Smith notched his first save of the year for the Sounds.

Nashville is now at .500 for the season with a record of 5 wins and 5 losses. They still have two more away games against New Orleans, Sunday and Monday. The Sounds have won 4 of their last 6 games.

Tonight’s fire power was distributed widely again with four players with two or more hits. Two hits each were supplied by Gwynn, Katin, and Koshansky. Iribarren went 3 for 5 with two runs scored and 2 RBIs (10). Hot-hitting Mat Gamel, who went into tonight’s game as the league’s second hottest hitter (.568), went 0 for 5 tonight. His averaged dropped to .444. Nashville knocked out 13 hits in tonight’s victory.

The Sounds scored two runs in the 2nd and 6th innings, respectively.  Zephyr’s starting pitcher Barone was pinch hit for inthe bottom of the 5th. He was pegged with his second straight loss of the season.

The Sound’s win tonight means they have won 50% of their first ten games. They are in 4th place in the PCL North division just a half game behind Omaha who lost 5-4 to Albuquerque tonight.

Memphis sits atop the North with a 6-2 record. The Sounds face the division leaders Monday night in Memphis for the first of a four game series before the Sounds return home to begin a home series against North division rivals Iowa, who are currently sitting second in the Sound’s division.
