The Nashville Sounds (4-5) began their first away series against the New Orleans Zephyrs tonight in the first of a four-game series, and they began it in fine style, shutting out the Zephyrs by a score of 9-0. Nick Green (1-0) notched his first win this season. Chris Narveson posted his second save of the season.

The Sounds had their highest offensive production of the year in terms of hits with fourteen tonight. Several Sounds players got at least two base hits, including: Gwynn (2-5), Gamel (3-5), Katin (2-5), Koshanski (2-4), and Irabarren (2-4). Alcides Escobar hit his first home run of the season in the 6th inning with 2 on and 2 out.

Matt Gamel (#6, 3B) is red hot to start the season, with a .516 batting average. That places him in the top three for hitters in the Pacific Coast League right now.

The Sounds were very efficient tonight as they scored seven of their twelve runners who were in scoring position in front of the opening home game for the Zephyrs with an attendance of 10,116.

Tonight’s 9-0 shut out of the Zephyrs was the first shut out for the Sounds in 2009. The last time the Sounds shut out an opponent was August 23, 2008 versus Round Rock. That was a 9-0 contest as well.

The Sounds are now 4-5.  Nashville and New Orleans go at it again tomorrow night, in a  six o’clock evening start.

The Sounds and Zephyrs just completed a four game series at Nashville (April 9th – 12th). The Zephyrs owned the Sounds during that series winning 3 out of 4 games. New Orleans scored 30 runs in that series while Nashville managed just 20.
